Essential facts Each year in the UK there are an estimated 150,000 cases of sepsis, and 44,000 people die as a result of the condition (UK Sepsis Trust). Sepsis is triggered by an infection that causes the immune system to attack the body's own tissues. If not treated quickly, it can lead to multiple organ failure and death.
